Anger needs you to apply the fight response of the sympathetic nervous system. By applying it, you switch to the parasympathetic nervous system. Sometimes it is a fight, sometimes it is a clear “NO’!”. If you don’t release this stress energy, you remain stuck in a stressful loop. This happens when people are irritated and frustrated. This loop brings feelings of hopelessness and helplessness as you are unable to take the necessary steps. Anger provides you the energy to take matters in your own hands and create the life that you would actually want. In society we see more expressions of unconstructive anger with violent outbursts, complaining and irritation. We therefore condemn anger to be something unwanted. This leads to the suppression of anger and we eventually fight ourselves.
The idea is that you learn to express your anger constructively and apply the fight response. This is the ultimate calming down method.
Many clients would like to argue that anger is not good or that they don’t have this. If this is the case, start slowly with journaling and learn to feel this aspect of yourself. Eventually I would like you to try it for yourself. When you have practised feeling anger with journaling for a while, you are ready.
